The Reverend Richard L. Matthews, Rector

The Reverend Richard Matthews has been Rector of Trinity Church, Anoka, Minnesota since March 2004 and has served in the Diocese of Minnesota since 1993.


Father Matthews did his undergraduate studies in mathematics at the University of Massachusetts and holds a Master of Science in Systems from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Indiana University. After graduation from UMass he served as a navigator/pilot in the Air Force and the Air National Guard, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military service included a year of combat flying in Southeast Asia in Air Force Special Operations.

Before ordination he was an executive the General Electric Company and CTS Corporation. He studied for the priesthood in the Diocese of Northern Indiana taking the General Ordination Examination in early 1986 and was ordained deacon in May 1986 and priest in December 1986. Prior to his call to Trinity Church he served:


Saint Paul’s, Minneapolis, MN as Rector, 1993 to 2004

Saint Luke’s, Baton Rouge, LA as Assistant Rector, 1991 to 1993

Holy Family, Angola, IN as vicar and first Rector, 1987 to 1991

Trinity, Fort Wayne, IN as seminarian and deacon 1981 to 1987


During his more than twenty years as a priest, he has served on Diocesan Council including one year as presiding chairman, finance committees in two dioceses and a diocesan endowment board. As a member of the greater ecumenical community, Father Matthews has been an officer and member of the executive committee of two ministerial associations. He currently serves as Chaplain at the Guardian Angels Care Facility in
Elk River, Minnesota.


In addition to his work as a parish priest Father Matthews is also a management consultant and professional  life coach.  He received his professional coaching training with the Coaches Training Institute.


Father Matthews and his wife, Jackie, live in Eden Prairie. They have two grown children.
